Victoria Yoga Conference Promo Video

My career goals are to create content that inspires and engages the world. I love to integrate sound with images and design with words.
Earlier this year I was asked to assist my friend, Carolyne Taylor of yoUnlimited and 24 Carrot Learning to produce a series of interviews with some of the yoga teachers she had participating in the inaugural Victoria Yoga Conference (February 1-3, 2013).
Happily I agreed and this is what I created (with my limited video production gear) and FCPx.
Was SO much fun to edit!

Inside the Heart

The shadow knows.
Heard that expression growing up.
Today I drew “Shadow” in my Wild Woman Mystery Cards deck.
Underneath it all, in the darkest part of my soul, or anybody’s soul for that matter - what does it all mean? How do we truly unleash who and what we are?
This got me mulling over my notes from last week’s Creative Mornings talk.
Inside guest speaker, Jessica Hische, billed as Letterer, Type Designer and Crazy Cat Lady she said, “I do whatever I feel like doing, most of the time.”
Shouldn’t we all?
Passion comes along with doing what makes our heart sing. I know this. Most may. But are we doing it?
I feel like shit today. Woke up with what I knew to be the stomach flu. Caved in. Missed my favourite two classes of the year: Typography and Motion.
That really sucked.
The universe decided I needed to look inside today.
So I am.
When asked recently what my dream job would be I responded truthfully.
“To be creative. I am an artist.”
I love to write. Take pictures. Edit video.

My hope is to inspire. Years ago I became a photojournalist, so I could do something to make a difference.
Colour and design make my soul sing. So does music, forward thinking and living outside the box.
These days I’m learning all the tools: Illustrator, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X, Motion, InDesign, HTML, CSS3, jQuery, etc. etc.
I know I’m different. Who cares to read my blog?
Some. Thank you to those that do. I hope I inspire you in some way.
There’s two projects that have been festering about in my psyche for a while: People, Purpose and Power, and Flab for Food.
Time now to embed these ideas. To do something.
Am sure I wasn’t the only one that could relate to what Jon Tan said during his guest stage discussion with Jessica.
“Keep playing and keep failing. It just costs time.”
What’s time if we can’t live doing what we enjoy?
Time now to stop thinking about what the world needs and instead focus on what you need.
By unleashing what truly lies inside your heart.
The rest of the world will benefit.

Uganda Wishes Take One

Since I've been learning Final Cut Pro X at school I turned Uganda Wishes into my short documentary project.
I've posted take one of Uganda Wishes to my VIMEO page.

Uganda Wishes from Jane Victoria King on Vimeo.
In November of 2010 I left Canada to spend six weeks in Africa.
I travelled to Uganda and volunteered at Mengo Hospital's HIV/AIDS clinic.
As a New Media Journalist I chose to document the HOPE of the people.
I asked for their wish for Uganda and for their wish for the World.
I called my journey there:
UGANDA WISHES

Let me know how it makes you feel and whether or not you'd be interested in volunteering at some point at the Mengo Hospital in Kampala, Uganda or in helping out locally with their fundraising efforts.
The need for support for the young HIV positive adolescents and for the Saturday Club is great. I have just learned this from two volunteers who returned last week.
Imagine being born HIV positive?
As one of the interviewees said, "The children, they are innocent..."
All comments and feedback are most welcome.
Sincerely,
Jane Victoria King

Happy Computer

Migrating an old Mac to a new Mac can be a chore. Especially when you’re me. Technically challenged.
It took me three times before I thought I got it right.
Tuesday I downloaded a schwack of HD footage for my Final Cut Pro X class.
Then the fans started coming on. My battery life went down to zilch. I was baffled.
They weren’t turning off.
Even at night.
Too much on the desktop maybe?
Nope.
Advice from here and there – re-install. Start all over again. But before that dump the goods to a back-up drive.
Finally I went to the be all and know all. The Coordinator of my Program.
“Should I book it into the Mac store?” I ask sullenly.
While still under warranty a “Diagnostic” test was advised.
The forums I’d read clearly indicated, “Houston, you have a serious problem.”
Before heading over I tried one last thing.
MacKeeper.
Then I had to plug in and sure enough the fans fired up again.
I’d been having issues when logging in. As well as with iTunes. So I broke down. But I called first.
Was told two to four days. First come first served.
But… but, but I’m an EMD student… I need my computer!
I arrive. Pathetic all over my face.
I’m given time. I’ve given expertise. I met a GENIUS!
Yup, the Mac Station dude fixed me up.
Got his goat on the iTunes issue but he killed it.
And brought my computer back to life.
Happy computer.
Happy ME!

Editing Life

As I stepped off the boat onto the dock and into the snow I saw unfamiliar tracks. Ahead of me was the owner.
Gingerly I approached as time had crept up on me. I was walking and I needed more then I had to get to school in time.
Slowly it gave way and proceeded ahead of me. Not to flutter and fly away, but to move aside.
It was a beautiful moment.
We respected each other’s space and purpose.
This afternoon in Final Cut Pro X class, Alec our teacher began in ernst a discussion on cutting footage.
On editing life.
Moments captured in time on video with audio, that which may never ever be seen or heard again.
We don’t keep what we don’t want to remember.
“Editing is about selecting the moments in time,” he explains.
The crap is gone.
Like what we choose to remember.
When we edit our life.
